What is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux is the back-flow (or reflux) of gastric acid that comes from the stomach, which then meets the esophagus causing what is known as heartburn.

How can Acid Reflux affect your Vocal Cords and Your Vocal Anatomy In General?

Acid Reflux disorder affecting voice, can cause your throat to become very sore. The throat pain occurs because stomach acid leaves the stomach and rises to the esophagus. In this instance, the acid gets mixed with saliva, thus can affect your vocal anatomy and, nevertheless, could cause you to lose your voice altogether.

This can also cause shortness of breath…

The above is due to the body trying to compensate for voice degradation which is caused by gastric acid reaching the vocal cords/folds. Due to the above, the reduction in air intake causes your vocal cords to strain. With that said, if left untreated, the risk of vocal cord damage rises. Thus, your voice may start sounding deeper and may affect its projection. Needless to say, the volume of your voice may also get compromised.

All the above problems make it hard for speakers or singers to properly be heard, therefore they often get asked to constantly repeat what they are trying to say, which definitely can be frustrating for both – the speaker, singer and the listener.

NOTE: Acid reflux can hurt not only your throat and vocal cords; it can also (mainly in heightened cases) injure your other organs like the lungs and even the heart.
